Frequently Asked Questions
What is a school counselor?
School counselors serve as a resource and advocate for ALL students through the delivery of a comprehensive school-counseling program that focuses on three domains:
School Counselors are professional educators who have earned at least a Master's Degree and certification in School Counseling. We are trained in counseling theories and practices, crisis intervention, career education, youth advocacy, individual appraisal procedures, exceptionalities/special needs, developmental stages of student growth, behavior, social/emotional/personal/cultural differences, and the total educational process with a mental health perspective.
Who does the school counselor work with?
School counselors work with ALL students!! We also collaborate and consult with parents, administrators, teachers, school resource officers, support staff, intervention specialists, and community/outside agencies on a daily basis to ensure the safety and success of all students!
How can students get in touch with their counselor?
Students may stop by my office during Homeroom, Lunch, REACH, or after school to make an appointment, or they may ask their teacher to call me if they need to see me asap. Parents may also contact me via email or phone at any time to request that I see their child.
How and why might parents contact the counselor?
Parents may call or email me at any time to set up a phone conference or a school visit for many reasons, including (but are not limited to): concerns about their child's achievement, SSP, IEP, 504 plan, transition/new to school, test results interpretation, referrals to community and school resources, specific needs, family difficulties, and/or peer/social and/or personal issues that may be impacting their child in school.
What is confidentiality?
Confidentiality is my promise to respect students' privacy in that what is said here, stays here. However, in some situations, I am required (by law and ethically) to break confidentiality if I feel or you tell me your safety is at risk in the following ways:
I may have to report to your parents, DCF, school administration, the school resource officer, and/or other support staff that will help keep you SAFE.
Your privacy and trust are important to me! If there is ever a need to reveal information, I will let you know in advance and work with you to handle the situation in a way that respects your feelings and needs.
